Producers need three things to make a song. Samples of sounds that already exist. Collaborators to fill gaps. Legal permission that doesn't require negotiating with 100 rights holders. Before Splice, getting these three things took weeks. In 2013, Matt Imanetti saw the problem clearly. He built Splice as a marketplace where producers could license high quality samples, collaborate with other musicians, and manage metadata automatically. The friction disappeared immediately. A producer could find a drum loop, license it for under a dollar, and use it the same hour. No clearance lawyers, no waiting, no uncertainty about whether they could sell the song. Splice took the split automatically, sent royalties to the original creator, and removed the biggest blocker in music production.
