Negative Externalities
The Las Vegas Sphere is bright enough to be seen from passenger jets. The cost pushed onto everyone who never bought a ticket.
When the sphere opened in Las Vegas in September 2023, U2 played the first residency. Tickets were going for over US$400 on average. The sphere itself glowed bright enough to be visible from passenger jets, descending into Harry Reid International Airport. Most concert reviews focused on the spectacle. Residents of the apartment buildings on Koval Lane and Sands Avenue, hundreds of metres away from the venue, suddenly found their bedroom windows bathed in pulsing red, green and blue light from one in the afternoon until well past midnight. None had agreed to live next to the world's largest screen. None received compensation for it. The sphere's owners profit from every show. Concert goers get a unique experience for their money. Neither group has any reason to factor the impact on the people sleeping nearby into their decision to play another show.
