Medical Intern
8 to 13 years to qualify. NSW intern starts on $73K. The first year that opens every door in medicine.
Grey's Anatomy and House made being a junior doctor look like surgery, romance, and dramatic diagnoses. The reality is closer to a 24-year-old in scrubs on a busy ward, the first doctor a patient sees in the morning, and the one writing the discharge summary that sends them home. Becoming an intern in Australia takes 8 to 13 years of education. Six years of medicine, if entered straight from high school, longer if a prior degree was needed. The first year out of medical school is the internship. The medical board sets the minimum rotations. Eight weeks in emergency, 10 weeks in general medicine, 10 weeks in general surgery, plus another 47 weeks across the rest of the year to qualify for general registration.
