Graduate Veterinarian

Year one: cat speys, vaccinations, the harder consults. Grad pay $55K to $80K. Rural adds 25 percent on top.

All creatures great and small and bondivate, made being a vet look like puppies, kittens, and happy farm visits. The reality is closer to a 24-year-old graduate vet at a small animal clinic, midway through the morning surgical list, performing a routine cat's bay under general anaesthetic. Becoming a veterinarian in Australia takes a doctor of veterinary medicine, typically four years of postgraduate study after a three-year bachelor degree. The qualification must come from one of seven universities recognized by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council. Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Murdoch, Adelaide, Charles Sturt, or James Cook. After graduation, the new vet registers with the state veterinary board and goes straight into practice with mental supervision.
