Dead Poets Society and School of Rock made teaching look like inspiring speeches and life-changing moments. The reality is closer to a 22-year-old first-year teacher in a public school, writing the next day's lesson plans against the syllabus until 10 at night, after marking a class set of essays. Becoming a teacher in New South Wales takes a four-year Bachelor of Education or a two-year Master of Teaching after another degree, accredited by AITSL. After graduation comes provisional accreditation with NASA. Within three years, full-time, the new teacher must achieve proficient teacher accreditation by submitting evidence against 37 graduate teacher standard descriptors signed off by a workplace supervisor. The day is built around the lesson, the class bell and the kids.
