A twelve week bootcamp with a strong Figma portfolio routinely beats a three year design degree on the hiring decision. Atlassian, Canva, Telstra and the big four banks all hire bootcamp graduates if the portfolio shows real product thinking. The most common pathway into junior user experience design is one of three routes. A three year Bachelor of Design with an interaction specialisation. A twelve week intensive bootcamp from a provider like General Assembly or Academy Xi. Or a self taught path with a strong portfolio. Bootcamps run between three thousand and seventeen thousand dollars. The curriculum covers research synthesis, information architecture, user flows, wireframes, high fidelity mockups and usability testing. The day is split between research and design. Running a thirty minute remote user interview.
