Graduate Geologist

Every metre of diamond drill core brought up from a kilometre below the surface tells a story. The graduate geologist is the one who reads it. The pathway is a three year Bachelor of Science Geology or Bachelor of Geoscience from the University of Western Australia, Curtin, the University of Queensland, Adelaide or Macquarie. Honours year is commonly required for mining sector graduate entry. The degree covers mineralogy, structural geology, sedimentology, ore deposit geology, geochemistry and geophysics. The Honours year is typically a six month independent field mapping project. The day on a mine site is split between core and computer. Logging a sixty metre run of drill core, measuring lithology change points, recording structures by orientation, marking sample intervals. Bagging reverse circulation chip samples every metre and taping a sample tag onto each calico bag.
