Roy Hill Employee Lottery
Every December 7, names are pulled from a barrel in the Pilbara. The winner walks away with $100K tax-free cash. Run by Gina Rineharts mine.
On the 7th of December every year, names get pulled at random out of a barrel inside a hospitality marquee in the Pilbara. Whoever is called walks away with $100,000 in tax-free cash. The draw happens on Gina Rinehart's late mother Hope's birthday, and Roy Hill, the iron ore mine owned by her Hancock Prospecting, has run it every year since. In 2022 it handed out 10 of those prizes. A year later, the gift expanded to 70 of them across all of her companies, drawn from more than 4000 workers, to mark her 70th birthday. $7 million given away by random draw, on top of everyone's regular pay. The lottery is the headline, but it sits on top of something more important. Since 2018, Roy Hill has paid an annual Chairman's Profit Scheme, bonus capped at 30% of base salary.
