Publix
How Publix became the largest employee-owned supermarket chain in America.
George Jenkins made a radical decision in nineteen forty-five. He offered to sell Publix to employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. The company would vest slowly, but any employee who stayed long enough would own the company alongside him. It was the opposite of Wall Street. It was building ownership into organizational DNA instead of extracting value. Employees who owned stock behaved differently. They reduced shrinkage. They stayed longer. Turnover dropped to a third of average. Lower turnover saved millions. Customer experience improved because employees knew shelves. Cashiers knew products. Stockers owned appearance. The ESOP turned employees into owners solving problems instead of taking orders or directions.
