Semi-conducted design is a race against obsolescence. Marvel technology launched in 1995 with a specific focus. Chips nobody else wanted to design. While Intel fought over processor architectures, Marvel built storage controllers that lived inside hard drives. While everyone chased smartphones, Marvel designed the chips that managed wireless signals and power consumption. The strategy seemed boring. Boring meant sustainable. A smartphone becomes obsolete in three years. A storage controller designed well lives for seven. Marvel could sell the same chip architecture to five generations of products. The R and D cost got amortized across enormous volumes. Meanwhile, competitors racing on speed and performance burned billions developing next generation designs.
