Casinos traditionally made seventy percent of revenue from gambling. Gaming dominated the economics. Hotel rooms and restaurants lost money or barely broke even. The business was gambling with hospitality services attached. Wall Street valued casinos on gaming multiples. But MGM asked a different question: what if we systematically shifted the mix toward hospitality. MGM invested massively in entertainment. Shows, concerts, celebrity chefs. Dining became destination restaurants. Hotel rooms transformed into luxury experiences. Entertainment generated much higher margins than slot machines. Premium guests paid more for exclusive shows than they lost gambling. The business model inverted slowly. The shift took years of reinvestment.
