A red carpet dress costs $2,400, a woman wears it once. Jennifer Hyman watched her sister spend a month's rent on a dress for a wedding, wore it for six hours, then hung it in a closet forever. Rent the runway launched in 2009 with a simple inversion. Rent the dress for 150. Return it Monday. The rental model started as one-time occasion wear, then Hyman added subscriptions. For $89 monthly, subscribers received four items at a time with unlimited swaps. A customer could wear a different designer outfit every day without buying anything. Revenue shifted from volatile occasion transactions to predictable monthly recurring income. By 2023, annual revenue exceeded $300 million.
