Bob Iger announced Disney would acquire Marvel for four billion dollars. Iger saw the critical difference between owning individual characters and owning universes. Marvel had an interconnected fictional world where ten characters operated simultaneously, each amplifying others' value. Iron Man made Captain America valuable. Captain America made Avengers possible. The universe was multiplicative, not simply additive. Between twenty ten and twenty nineteen, Marvel theatrical releases generated over twenty-two billion worldwide. Streaming, merchandise, and theme parks pushed the value past thirty billion. Most studios owned individual characters. Marvel owned an entire ecosystem.
