Andrew Carnegie arrived with nothing, built a steel empire making him wealthiest alive. By nineteen hundred, he'd accumulated one hundred fifty billion in contemporary dollars. At sixty-five, he announced a man who dies rich dies disgraced and liquidated his fortune. He identified institutions to reshape American society permanently. Libraries were his obsession. Between nineteen hundred and nineteen twenty-nine, he funded twenty-five hundred public libraries across North America, each bearing his name. Scale plus consistency created permanence. He also funded research universities, Carnegie Institute of Technology, endowed foundations, and the Peace Palace.
