Sidney Kidman

In the 1880s, a 13-year-old boy walked away from his family struggling farm in South Australia with five shillings in his pocket and a horse he could barely control. He headed north into the outback, working as a stockman on cattle stations so remote that supplies arrived once a year. He slept on dirt floors, earned almost nothing, and learned every creek bed, stock route, and waterhole between Adelaide and the Gulf of Carpentaria. But Sydney Kidman understood before anyone else was that the Australian outback was not a wasteland. It was a supply chain waiting to be connected. Drought was the enemy of every cattleman, but Kidman realized that drought never hit everywhere at the same time. If you owned enough stations spread across a wide enough area, you could move cattle from dry country to green country along a chain of properties, keeping them fed and watered the entire way to market. No one had thought about land ownership this way before. Other cattlemen bought the best country they could afford and prayed for rain. Kidman bought strategically, targeting properties not for their grass, but for their position in a network. Each station connected to the next along stock routes and waterways like links in a chain. He started with a single small run in the Flinders ranges, then a second property further north, then a third along a river system that connected the two.
