SAAB, the Swedish defense company, turned this weakness into unmatched strength. They sell the Gripen fighter jet to nations that cannot or will not buy American F-Sixteens or Russian Sukhois. Brazil wanted a fighter jet. Buying American meant joining the American bloc. Buying Russian risked sanctions. SAAB offered a third path. South Africa faced similar pressure. Hungary needed air defense but faced political isolation from Washington. Each could buy from SAAB without making a geopolitical choice. Neutrality became the sales pitch.
