Corporate credit cards don't seem like a place where founders change markets. Yet in 2017, Henrika Dubogras and Pedro Franceski launched Brex with a specific insight. The best small business customers were being turned away by traditional card issuers because they lacked years of tax history and personal credit scores. These companies were high growth startups, not high risk. Brex approved based on cash flow and bank account velocity, a three-month-old company with 500,000 in monthly transactions got a card. The economics flipped. Traditional issuers wanted mature, stable revenue. Brex wanted growth. Young companies that spent fast and repaid reliably became their most profitable segment because early-stage spending aligned perfectly with Brex's business model.
