Coursera gave away Stanford lectures to 15 million learners at zero revenue. The free content built the brand that made a $49 certificate valuable. Charity was the marketing budget.

Stanford professors put their lectures online for free in 2012. 15 million people enrolled in the first year without paying a dollar. Coursera had the largest classroom on Earth and zero revenue. The free content was not the product. It was the entrance to a building with paid rooms inside. Free courses from 200 universities. Completion certificates cost $49 to $79. Professional certificates from Google and Meta cost 39 monthly over three to six months. Full online degrees from accredited universities cost 15 to 25,000, a fraction of campus tuition. The pricing ladder moved users from free to certificates to full degrees, each step generating more revenue. By 2023, Coursera had 136 million learners.
