TSMC
How Taiwan Semiconductor became the most important company in the world.
Every advanced chip in every phone, laptop, server, and AI system on Earth was manufactured by one company. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. TSMC does not design chips and does not sell chips. It manufactures chips that other companies design. Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, and Qualcomm all send their designs to the same factory in Taiwan. There is no alternative at the cutting edge. The manufacturing technique that gives TSMC its unassailable lead is yield rate obsession. A semiconductor fabrication plant can cost twenty billion dollars to build, but the real competition happens at the molecular level. Yield rate is the percentage of chips on a silicon wafer that come out working perfectly. At the most advanced nodes, the difference between TSMC and its closest competitors is often just a few percentage points of yield. But those few points translate to billions of dollars. A higher yield means more working chips per wafer, which means lower cost per chip, which means TSMC can offer prices and volumes that no competitor can match. Intel and Samsung have spent tens of billions trying to close the gap. Neither has matched TSMC's yield discipline.
