Viktor & Rolf

A Dutch couture house earns most of its money from one bright pink bottle.

A Dutch couture house that shows only two garment collections a year earns the vast majority of its revenue from a single pink grenade-shaped bottle. Victor Horsting and Rolf Snorren founded their label in 1993 as a pure art couture project. The problem with couture is well known in the industry. A single gown takes hundreds of hours, buyers' number in the dozens globally, and the economics simply do not work without a licensing partner. In 2005, the house partnered with L'Oreal to launch Flower Bomb, a fragrance built around a fictional explosion of Jasmine, Rose and Pachouli. Couture houses that treat fragrance as an afterthought collect a small royalty on someone else's product. Victor and Rolf embedded the bottle design, the name and the scent identity inside the core brand universe from the first day, so every fashion show, every magazine spread, and every window display carried the Flower Bomb silhouette.
