Better
Better.com automated income verification, appraisal, and underwriting to close mortgages in weeks not months. SoftBank put in $700 million betting the data already exists in tax returns. Mortgage lending is an information problem.
Vishal Garg believed that getting a mortgage should take minutes, not months. The average American home loan required 45 days of paperwork, dozens of phone calls and stacks of documents faxed between strangers. Better.com launched in 2016 to compress that entire process into a digital experience that could close in as little as three weeks. The platform automated income verification, property appraisal ordering, and underwriting decisions that traditionally required teams of specialists. By 2021, Better was originating over 50 billion in home loans annually with a fraction of the headcount of traditional lenders. SoftBank invested over 700 million. The company made home ownership faster and more accessible for hundreds of thousands of families.
