Peter Thomas Roth

From a Hungarian acid peel to a $400M Black Diamond mask line.

A Hungarian immigrant who ran a Manhattan Day Spa through the 1970s launched a skincare brand in 1993 built around a single marketing decision. Every product would carry the same bold, unpretentious label font, so a customer scanning a counter could instantly recognize the brand without reading a word. Peter Thomas Roth ran a Manhattan skincare spa from 1973 and spent 20 years refining clinical formulations before productizing them for retail. The launch range included clinical grade retinol, glycolic acid and salicylic acid treatments at a time when most department store skincare was pastel colored and vague. Peter Thomas Roth packaging was black text on white with percentage strengths printed prominently on every label. The label discipline functioned as shelf discoverability.
