How one dermatologist’s clinic became a $300M global skincare brand.

Dr. Howard Murad was a practicing dermatologist in Los Angeles in the late 1980s, when he noticed that patients who took specific dietary supplements alongside topical treatments showed measurably better skin outcomes than patients on topical treatments alone. He turned that clinical observation into a skin care brand, and then a supplement brand, and ran both through the same counter for three decades. Murad opened his dermatology clinic in El Segundo, California in 1989. He launched his skin care line in 1989 and a companion range of ingestible supplements called Pure Skin. Clarifying dietary supplement, a few years later, positioning the two as the inside-out approach. The dermatology practice stayed open alongside the product business, which gave the brand a continuous source of clinical feedback that standalone skin care brands simply do not have access to.
