A California Esthetician opened a small facial studio in West Hollywood in 2004. Her clientele included Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon, and Jessica Alba. Eight years later, Unilever bought the attached product brand. Kate Somerville trained as an esthetician in the 1990s and worked as a facialist at a dermatology practice in Santa Monica before opening her own clinic on Melrose Place in 2004. The clinic quickly became a favored destination for Hollywood actresses, and Somerville developed signature in clinic products, like her ex-folly Kate cleanser, that she applied during the 30-minute facial. Clients who had received a treatment could not stop asking to buy the product, and she formalized the retail line in 2004. The clinic functioned as a celebrity endorsement manufactured without paying any of them.
