Rihanna had already built a $1.4 billion cosmetics brand when she launched her skincare line in 2020. The launch sold through $50 million of inventory in the first year. Fenty Beauty had launched in 2017 as a partnership between Rihanna and LVMH, and the makeup brand rewrote the industry's approach to foundation shade depth within its first quarter. Fenty skin followed three years later, also under the LVMH joint venture, with a deliberately tight launch range of three products, priced at a relative mid prestige point, between $25 and $40 per item. The tight range was the strategic choice, because most celebrity skincare launches try to span moisturiser, cleanser, serum, eye cream, sunscreen, and mask on day one. A three product launch works commercially because it lets the founders marketing spend concentrate on fewer SKUs, which drives each one to hire unit velocity at launch and produces cleaner customer feedback for the second release.
