A Canadian designer launched a make-up brand in 2011, built on a single-type thesis. Clean beauty could perform at the same level as conventional prestige cosmetics. And if it could, the whole category would eventually move. Sasha Plabzig founded Iliya Beauty in 2011 in Canada. With a collection of tinted lip conditioners, at a time when clean beauty was considered a boutique hobby category, rather than a commercially serious segment. The brand's early positioning was non-negotiable. Every product was formulated without parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance or petroleum derivatives, while matching or exceeding conventional competitor performance on wearability and colour payoff. The strategic bet was that clean beauty demand would go mainstream within a decade. If Iliya was the performance reference brand, when that shift happened, it would become the default choice for customers converting from conventional cosmetics.
