A Caribbean-American founder built a curl-haircare empire after Sephora rejected her twice.

Nancy Twine grew up in upstate New York, mixing her mother's hair treatments from raw pantry ingredients. Left a Wall Street commodity trading career in 2013, and launched a hair care brand built around the formulations she had watched being made on her kitchen table. Nancy Twine had spent six years trading commodities at Goldman Sachs when she left in 2013 to launch Bruegero. The founding thesis was that the prestige hair care category was almost entirely formulated for straight or loosely wavy hair. Twine positioned Bruegero as a prestige hair care house that formulated for all hair types inclusively, priced comparably to mainstream prestige brands and sold through Sephora. The commercial gap Bruegero exploited was pricing discrimination in textured hair care.
