A British clean-skincare brand grew from a kitchen lab to a $50M empire.

Sarah Brown was diagnosed with a chronic sensitive skin condition in her late 20s that prevented her from using nearly every commercial skin care product on the market. She launched her own brand from a tiny London kitchen in 2007 to formulate the products she could actually use. Brown had worked in London fashion PR through the early 2000s when she developed chronic urticaria, an immune condition that caused severe skin flare-ups on contact with common cosmetics preservatives, fragrances and essential oils. Only every mainstream skin care product triggered a reaction. She taught herself formulation chemistry through night classes and launched pie skin care in 2007 with every product built to an exceptionally restrictive ingredient list that excluded fragrance, alcohol, essential oils and synthetic preservatives.
