A Seattle-based married couple started blending skin care from food-grade ingredients in their home kitchen in 2011. Within a decade, the brand was sold at Sephora globally and generating estimated annual revenue above $70 million. Julia Wills and Alexander Comerro launched herbivore botanicals in 2011 from their kitchen in Seattle, initially selling handcrafted bath salts and facial oils at local farmers markets and small natural goods stores. The founding commitment was that every product had to be formulated from ingredients the founders could pronounce and would put in their own food. The early products used rosehip, coconut, jasmine and pink clay, sold in simple glass bottles with minimalist labels that were almost unbranded in their restraint.
