Orangetheory
How Orangetheory Fitness used heart-rate science and franchise momentum to build a billion-dollar workout chain.
Ellen Latham was a Pilates instructor who lost her franchise rights overnight when the parent company restructured in two thousand ten. Instead of rebuilding someone else's model, she designed her own. Group fitness classes where every member wore a heart rate monitor displayed on screens around the room. That screen changed everything. Members saw their heart rate zones in real time, colour coded from grey to orange to red. The orange zone meant peak fat burning effort. Every class became a personal competition. Members chased their own data and came back to beat their previous numbers. Latham had turned a commodity group fitness class into a quantified personal challenge.
