A Los Angeles-based entrepreneur noticed in the mid-2010s that Venice Beach locals had an effortlessly beachy hair, texture no salon product had reproduced commercially. She decided to package the effect and sell it. Shelby Wilde founded Playa in Los Angeles in 2017, positioning the brand around a signature beach textured hair effect that California residents achieved naturally through saltwater and sunlight. The challenge was replicating the effect in a bottle without the dryness that real saltwater exposure causes. Playa's hero product, the Endless Summer Spray, was a formulated sea salt spray that added texture without the drying silicates common in competing beach sprays. The packaging was minimalist white with a single product name, designed to look like it had come from a California holiday shop rather than a cosmetics counter.
