Elsie Rutterford and Dominica Menarovich were both working in London media in 2015 when they started running clean beauty workshops out of a small East London studio. The workshops turned into a manufacturing commitment that became a brand. The two co-founders built BYBI out of a workshop business called Clean Beauty Co where they taught women how to formulate natural skincare at home. The teaching work surfaced a clear commercial gap, students wanted to buy ready-made versions of the formulations, but the Clean Beauty shelf at London retailers was full of brands that either used synthetic preservatives, the workshop curriculum had taught the students to avoid, or were too expensive for everyday use.
