Nina Riccis great grandson left the family business to build single-molecule fragrances.

Romano Ricci is the great-grandson of Nina Ricci, the Parisian couture and fragrance house founded in 1932. Rather than inherit the family business, he launched his own niche fragrance brand in 2006 with an explicitly rebellious name and a radical single-note composition philosophy. Ricci had grown up inside the Nina Ricci fragrance dynasty and could have inherited a role there, but chose in 2006 to launch Juliette Hasagon independently. The brand name was a deliberate distancing from the formal heritage of the family business, aligning the house with a younger, irreverent customer segment. The founding compositions took an unusual technical approach. Rather than complex multi-note blends, many Juliette Hasagon. Fragrances were built around a single distinctive molecule or ingredient, most famously not a perfume, composed almost entirely of setalocks, a synthetic amber mask.
