Marc Jacobs Fragrance

A rubber daisy cap and a $70 price tag captured the gap luxury fragrance houses had left open.

Mark Jacobs launched his fashion house in New York in 1984 and partnered with Cody Prestige in 2003 for his first fragrance. Daisy, released in 2007, became one of the top selling prestige women's fragrances of the following decade, despite being priced at a deliberately accessible point. Jacobs was already a celebrated American designer with his own eponymous house and the creative directorship at Louis Vuitton. When Cody signed the fragrance license in 2003, Daisy launched with a signature bottle featuring three-dimensional rubber daisies on the cap, a visual design that was visually distinctive on any retailer shelf and immediately recognizable even from a distance. The fragrance was priced around $70 at launch, which positioned it excessively within prestige rather than targeting the high luxury tier associated with couture house scents.
