A Houston mother of four with no beauty industry background had been distributing a Malaysian cleansing bar door to door before launching her own skincare line at the age of 42. Shiseido bought the brand for $845 million US dollars seven years later. Tiffany Masterson founded Drunk Elephant in Houston in 2012 with a list of ingredients she refused to use. She named them the Suspicious Six. No essential oils, no drying alcohols, no silicones, no chemical sunscreens, no fragrances and dyes, and no SLS detergents. The hero product, TLC Phramboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum, was anchored on glycolic acid. The brand name came from the elephants in the source region that eat fermented maroula fruit and sway as if drunk.
