Goldfaden MD
A Florida derm found walnut shell scrubs caused the broken capillaries he treated daily. So he patented a ruby crystal alternative.
A Florida dermatologist with 50 years in practice realised in 2013 that the walnut shell scrubs his patients were using, with a cause of the broken capillaries he was treating in clinic. He patented a non abrasive alternative made of crushed ruby crystals. Dr. Gary Goldfaden launched Goldfaden MD in 2013 with daughter Lisa Goldfaden and daughter-in-law Lauren Walk Goldfaden running sales. The hero product, the doctor's scrub, used real ruby crystals instead of jagged walnut shell and retailed between 38 and 78 US dollars. The doctor's scrub alone accounts for 25% of the brand revenue. The patent meant no competitor could copy the formula without licensing the technology directly from Goldfaden's clinic. The advantage was the family. Most prestige-derm brands signed celebrity ambassadors or licensed a doctor's name to a corporate parent.
