Ethereum can process around 30 transactions per second. Bitcoin process is seven. Yet millions of users want to transact simultaneously. Traffic backs up, fees explode. Ethereum becomes unusable unless you're willing to pay hundreds of dollars per transaction. Building a new blockchain to compete with Ethereum seemed obvious, but Polygon chose differently. Polygon built Layer 2, a network that sits on top of Ethereum. Users transact on Polygon at massive speed and minimal cost. Polygon processes thousands of transactions per second. Then Polygon bundles those transactions and settles them on Ethereum in bulk. Ethereum provides the settlement layer and the security. Polygon provides the speed and low costs. The insight was architectural.
