The century-old infrastructure that powers every building in the country — and why upgrading it is the hardest engineering problem nobody talks about.
The electric grid is a natural monopoly. The utility company lays power lines across a region. Duplicate lines would be wasteful. A second company couldn't build competing lines without massive redundancy. So utilities have geographic monopolies. They're regulated. The government allows them to operate exclusively in exchange for rate oversight and service obligations. A regulated utility earns a guaranteed return on capital. If they invest 100 million in infrastructure, regulators allow them to earn 7% annual returns. It's not enough to get rich. It's enough to fund infrastructure and rewards patient capital. Utilities raise billions and bonds because investors know returns are stable and predictable under regulation. The $400 billion US electricity market exists because of this regulated monopoly structure.
