Most private equity firms buy established companies, load them with debt, cut costs, and sell within five to seven years. Warburg Pincus did something different. Founded in nineteen sixty six, the firm invested in growing companies that still had room to expand. Not financial engineering. Growth capital. Longer hold periods. Lower debt ratios. Traditional buyouts extract value through leverage and cost cutting. Growth equity extracts value through revenue expansion. Warburg would give a growing company fifty million dollars and patience instead of five hundred million dollars and quarterly targets. The company could invest in market share, product development, and international expansion.
